In the winter of 1917, an odd, golden-colored puppy was born in New Hampshire. Arthur T. Walden named the puppy Chinook after the powerful winds he'd experienced in the mountains of Alaska during the Gold Rush. Over the next 12 years, Walden and his amazing First Chinook became front-page celebrities across the U.S., setting mushing records and popularizing the sport of sled dog racing. They established an entirely new breed of sled dog named after Chinook, and joined Admiral Byrd on his historic First Antarctic Expedition in 1928. Enjoy this largely unknown story of true adventure in our delightful little book written by David Pagel in the rollicking spirit of Robert W. Service's great Yukon ballads. Rick Allen's stunning wood engravings complement the verse to make a great gift for dog-lovers, wood-engraving fans or adventure-tale lovers of any age. |
