Moving the Kluge

I think that could be a new dance, don’t you? Instead of “Do the Dougie” it could be “Move the Kluge.”

Our friend Randy Larson helped with the move. Randy and Rick have been friends since they were little boys. Randy is a master of all things physical having to do with building and machinery. Here they are consulting with each other. Rick’s in the white shirt, Randy’s in black. They have the same glasses.

Here are the Kluge’s former mom and dad, Kathy and Kermit, saying goodbye.

On the truck and ready to roll, in beautiful downtown Superior, Wisconsin.

And finally, having arrived at Randy’s shop—its temporary home until we figure out how to fit it into the tiny space that is Kenspeckle Letterpress.

Rick covered it with a tarp after rubbing its exposed bits with turtle wax. The love affair has begun. I should tell you that this press is considered so unsafe to run that you have to be an owner in order to operate it legally. When it’s running it’s like some kind of comical yet logical Rube Goldberg animation… beautiful.

  1. that randy larson is a true friend. great pictures. i look forward to hearing about its future.

  2. (and that video is amazing. it really is rube goldberg-like.)

  3. You know Randy, right Laurie? Yes, the video… and did you watch the Dougie, too?

  4. The best part of the video is the “ding” after every sheet. Can’t wait to hear that coming down the hallway here in Dewitt Seitz!

  5. Not all Kluges ding, I don’t think… but it can probably be arranged!

  6. I find this to be very soothing, especially the light-hearted “ding”.

  7. Ann, the whole machine in action is a very soothing thing to be around… it just has an air about it.

  8. If the press does not have the built in ding, I am thinking you would simply hire an extra employee or maybe a temp if run only on Tuesdays to have a hand held ringer to provide the ding. They should have been a music major with good rhythm in school….
Kind of like a “Greeter” at Walmart but in this case simply the “Ringer” on your staff if anyone need to know what they do….

  9. marian, yes, i knew randy back when he was, as you say, a little boy, though i probably would not recognize him now. and as for “the dougie,” let me just say that no doug that i know would ever dance like that…

  10. Eric, I think a middle-schooler with a little triangle should work, don’t you? I cannot tell you how often we said, “Maybe we call Eric” during this whole saga.

  11. Laurie, I know, right? I should see if I can find out why it’s called the ‘dougie.’ I have to admit I wish I could do it.
